He remembered her

He remembered her. In the beginning his mind was full of reminders of her. It was overflowing with thoughts and imagines. Events and split seconds of bliss. Everywhere he looked he would see her. It seemed like she was in the strangest and most obscure of places at times. Sometimes it made him smile. Sometimes he would rather forget. But she was constantly around. Popping into his head when he least expected it, telling him gently not to erase her. He was determined not to let that happen.

Then slowly the memories were not as clear. He started to forget certain moments. Mental images became fuzzy. He couldn't remember details about certain days. What she had worn. How her hair had looked. What they had talked about. It scared him. He fought against it. He didn’t want it to happen. He tried for her to forever live in his thoughts. He wanted new experiences to remind him of her. He needed her to stay around. But he couldn't prevent time from ticking away and taking her along with it.

Piece by piece she gradually vanished. One memory at a time. Touch by touch. Smile by smile. All began to leave. Until all he had left was her name, her face and a handful of blurry moments stuck in his memory. Those, too, would eventually slip away. There was nothing he could do about it but to let it happen. To watch her painfully disappear. The same way she had done once before.
